The National Artists’ Association (NAA) successfully organized its National-Level Art Camp “Varsha ’26” (Rainy Season ’26) from 18 to 20 September 2026 at Surya Art Gallery, Gandharvapur Artists’ Village, Saputara, Dangs, Gujarat. Set against the misty hills, monsoon landscape and refreshing atmosphere of Saputara, the three-day camp brought together nearly 20 artists from 10 cities across eight Indian states, creating an engaging platform for artistic exchange, experimentation and dialogue.
The camp was curated by senior visual artist and curator Atul Padia of Baroda and Prabuddha Ghosh of Pune. While the broad conceptual reference was the rainy season, the participating artists were encouraged to retain their individual artistic languages and expressions rather than remain strictly confined to the central theme.
Participating artists included Seema Bharti (Chhattisgarh); Ajit Patel, Anjum Meer, Chandrashekhar Patil, Dr. Pankaj Malukar, Sanjivani Chaudhary, Vijay Kacchia and Vikram Pandya (Gujarat); Anamika Kundwani (Madhya Pradesh); Hitendra Gawade and Prabuddha Ghosh (Maharashtra); Roopali Sharma (New Delhi); Dr. Neelu Sharma (Rajasthan); Renu Panjwani (Uttar Pradesh); and Jayanta Khan (West Bengal), along with several other artists.
Alongside the camp, two parallel exhibitions presented the works of Vadodara-based multi-disciplinary artist Chandrashekhar Patil, featuring drawings and paintings, and Dr. Pankaj Malukar, a renowned gynecologist and passionate pilot, showcasing photography. Both exhibitions received support from the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy. Patil explored feelings, emotions, memories and his personal relationship with collections of ordinary, everyday objects. Dr. Malukar presented a visual journey reflecting his close encounters and interactions with big cats and other wildlife, offering viewers an intimate perspective on the natural world.
The curatorial approach of the camp extended beyond the production of artworks. Atul Padia demonstrated on canvas the purpose and processes of modern art execution, while co-curator Prabuddha Ghosh emphasized knowledge-based approaches to understanding art and contemporary aesthetics. Internationally acclaimed corporate economist Mr. Kirit Patel also maintained continuous interaction with the participating artists and offered his perspectives on the purpose and wider significance of art. He further expressed his commitment to provide financial support to the National Artists’ Association.
Mr. Ram Krishna Agrawal, a passionate artist and fashion professional, mentored the participants throughout the camp. He also expressed his desire to associate with the National Artists’ Association in its future journey of promoting art, culture and heritage at the national level.
The resulting artworks demonstrated considerable diversity—from home décor and atmospheric landscapes to spiritual explorations and conceptual expressions. Several works directly or indirectly evoked the monsoon. Chandrashekhar Patil explored creation through animal-related imagery, while Hitendra Gawade connected his professional background in education with letters and the concept of “Akshar.” Jayanta Khan reflected on his long artistic journey towards addressing anti-terrorism, while Vikram Pandya transformed cityscapes through personal feelings and distinctive observations. Ajit Patel portrayed a pair of cranes, whereas Dr. Neelu Sharma explored the crane through a single-subject composition.
Prabuddha Ghosh presented two contrasting yet complementary works: ‘Fertility’, a pair of canvases inspired by the essence of the rainy season through his distinctive Neo-Tantric expression, and a simple monochrome rainy landscape exploring texture and atmosphere—demonstrating diverse artistic responses to a shared seasonal theme.
The camp and the accompanying exhibitions attracted tourists, art lovers and regular gallery visitors, who experienced both the creative process and the completed works in the distinctive environment of Gandharvapur Artists’ Village.
The three-day program concluded with a valedictory ceremony led by veteran artist Suryakant Goswamy, founder of Surya Art Gallery and Gandharvapur Artists’ Village. Atul Padia delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the participating artists, patrons and audience, followed by the distribution of certificates.
Varsha ’26 demonstrated that a national art camp can transcend a common theme to become a platform where individual experiences, regional identities, professional knowledge and contemporary artistic languages converge. The monsoon provided inspiration rather than limitation, enabling diverse expressions of rain, landscape, memory, spirituality, nature, urban life and social concerns. The interaction among artists, curators, mentors, patrons and audiences strengthened dialogue between creativity, culture and community, marking another step toward a sustained national network for artistic exchange and cultural engagement.
